Popular Hearing Aids

The best hearing aid in the world can provide awful results. The key is not so much who made it, but who has selected, fit, and adjusted it.

Choosing the right model makes a big difference. Each manufacturer has “entry level”, “mid level”, and “high end” selections. If you choose a well known brand name, but have a special hearing problem and select the budget or entry level model, there may be disappointments ahead.

Hearing aids are available in analog or digital models. Analog hearing aids have been on the market for years. These are less expensive than the digital hearing aids but do not provide the sound quality and features that digital hearing aids provide. Digital hearing aids offer a clearer sound quality than analog models and can be programmed by computer to achieve a high level of adjustment. Digital hearing prices have fallen, hence, more people can afford them.

These are the most popular hearing aids brands .

Common Toxic Bacteria You Should Avoid

Common Toxic Bacteria You Should Avoid: Where They’re Usually Found

The number of bacterias that can cause illness in humans is only a small fraction of those that exist. It’s not necessary, or even possible, to avoid all bacteria, you should be aware of the toxic varieties, and how to keep yourself and your family safe.

Legionella pneumophila

This bacteria leads to an infection called legionellosis. There are two forms of legionellosis:

Legionnaires’ disease - the severe form of the infection, which includes pneumonia. Between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease in the United States each year, according to the CDC.

Pontiac fever - a milder illness. Symptoms, which include fever, headaches and muscle aches, go away without treatment.

Legionella bacteria are found in water, particularly warm water found in cooling towers, hot tubs, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems and parts of air-conditioning systems in big buildings.

Staphylococcus Aureus

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria are present in your nasal passages, throats, skin and hair of some 50 percent of normal healthy people, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If concentrated in large enough quantities in foods, however, it can cause food poisoning that results in nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramping.

Foods that are at risk of contamination by Staphylococcus aureus include dairy, meats, creamy salads (egg salad, chicken salad, etc.), cream-filled pastries and sandwich fillings. Food handlers are the main cause of contamination. Although food poisoning can be serious, staphylococcal food poisoning usually resolves in two days.

The Staphylococcus aureus bacteria can cause a much more serious problem, also known as staph infections. Staph bacteria can cause a number of other infections, including folliculitis, boils, scalded skin syndrome, impetigo, cellulites and toxic shock syndrome.

Listeria monocytogenes

Eating food contaminated with listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis infection along with meningitis, encephalitis and intrauterine infections. CDC, estimates 2,500 persons become seriously ill with listeriosis each year and, of these, 500 die. Healthy people do not experience any symptoms from ingesting listeria, pregnant women, newborns and those with weakened immune systems can become very sick.

Listeria is usually found in soil and water, and therefore can contaminate raw foods of all kinds, including fruits, vegetables, meats,  dairy products and seafood. It can also contaminate soft cheeses and cooked meats like hot dogs and deli meats during packaging.

Avoid eating raw or undercooked meats and dairy and wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.

A Pandemic Is Declared H1N1 Update July 29

H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

For Immediate Release: July 29, 2009
Contact: CDC Division of Media Relations
(404) 639-3286

On June 11, 2009, the World Health OrganizationExternal Web Site Icon. (WHO) signaled that a global pandemic of novel influenza A (H1N1) was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6External Web Site Icon.. This action was a reflection of the spread of the new H1N1 virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus. At the time, more than 70 countries had reported cases of novel influenza A (H1N1) infection and there were ongoing community level outbreaks of novel H1N1 in multiple parts of the world.

Since the WHO declaration of a pandemic, the new H1N1 virus has continued to spread, with the number of countries reporting cases of novel H1N1 nearly doubling. The Southern Hemisphere’s regular influenza season has begun and countries there are reporting that the new H1N1 virus is spreading and causing illness along with regular seasonal influenza viruses. In the United States, significant novel H1N1 illness has continued into the summer, with localized and in some cases intense outbreaks occurring. The United States continues to report the largest number of novel H1N1 cases of any country worldwide, however, most people who have become ill have recovered without requiring medical treatment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met today to make recommendations for use of vaccine against novel influenza A (H1N1).

The committee met to develop recommendations on who should receive vaccine against novel influenza A (H1N1) when it becomes available, and to determine which groups of the population should be prioritized if the vaccine is initially available in extremely limited quantities.

The committee recommended the vaccination efforts focus on five key populations.  Vaccination efforts are designed to help reduce the impact and spread of novel H1N1. The key populations include those who are at higher risk of disease or complications, those who are likely to come in contact with novel H1N1, and those who could infect young infants. When vaccine is first available, the committee recommended that programs and providers try to vaccinate:

* pregnant women,
* people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age,
* health care and emergency services personnel,
* persons between the ages of 6 months through 24 years of age, and
* people from ages 25 through 64 years who are at higher risk for novel H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

The groups listed above total approximately 159 million people in the United States.

The committee does not expect that there will be a shortage of novel H1N1 vaccine, but availability and demand can be unpredictable. There is some possibility that initially the vaccine will be available in limited quantities. In this setting, the committee recommended that the following groups receive the vaccine before others:

* pregnant women,
* people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age,
* health care and emergency services personnel with direct patient contact,
* children 6 months through 4 years of age, and
* children 5 through 18 years of age who have chronic medical conditions.

The committee recognized the need to assess supply and demand issues at the local level. The committee further recommended that once the demand for vaccine for these prioritized groups has been met at the local level, programs and providers should begin vaccinating everyone from ages 25 through 64 years. Current studies indicate the risk for infection among persons age 65 or older is less than the risk for younger age groups. Therefore, as vaccine supply and demand for vaccine among younger age groups is being met, programs and providers should offer vaccination to people over the age of 65.

The committee also stressed that people over the age of 65 receive the seasonal vaccine as soon as it is available. Even if novel H1N1 vaccine is initially only available in limited quantities, supply and availability will continue, so the committee stressed that programs and providers continue to vaccinate unimmunized patients and not keep vaccine in reserve for later administration of the second dose.

The novel H1N1 vaccine is not intended to replace the seasonal flu vaccine. It is intended to be used alongside seasonal flu vaccine to protect people.  Seasonal flu and novel H1N1 vaccines may be administered on the same day.

Scotland-

The latest figures about the incidence of influenza A (H1N1) in Scotland since a change to the reporting system have been published today.

Today’s findings are:

* A rate of GP consultations for flu-like illness - not necessarily H1N1 - across Scotland of 47 per 100,000
* Ten per cent of community samples tested were positive for H1N1
* There have been 55 people with influenza A (H1N1) hospitalised since the start of the outbreak. Two are in hospital as of today
* There have been four deaths linked to influenza A (H1N1) since the start of the outbreak

New Health Websites

Recently while scouring the net looking for new health related websites and health information I came across a Blog called Your Health Blog. This website although not very old has a nice layout that is easy to read and I found the articles to be quite good. Not all of them but most of them. Some of the health issues covered were dieting, acid reflux, hearing and snoring. Simple but helpful articles on a variety of health issues. The site seems to be slowly growing and should be great if whomever is doing this keeps it up.

Another site of interest if your interested in information such as high blood pressure definition or other hypertension high blood pressure and other related cardiovascular issues is BPFactsheet.com .

This is an excerpt-

Over the early years of life and into middle age, men are more likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure. In the later years, after menopause, the statistics for women and menopause tend to go up as well. Race is another risk factor in high blood pressure, with African Americans are much more likely to be diagnosed with this condition than whites, and usually at an earlier age.

Different Kinds Of Hypertension

To know what causes hypertension, you must first learn about the different types of this condition.

Primary Hypertension

Primary hypertension is the most common type of high blood pressure. In this case, the cause  is usually not identified, and the condition will gradually develop over a number of years. With primary hypertension, the best treatment is to address the high blood pressure itself with medication and lifestyle changes.

Prescription Anti Wrinkle Creams

The effectiveness of wrinkle creams depends in part on the active ingredient or ingredients. Here are some common ingredients that may result in slight to modest improvements in wrinkles.

There are many products that claim to reduce or eliminate wrinkles. Vitamin A & E to neutralize free radicals that cause wrinkles . Many wrinkle creams and lotions sold in department stores, in drugstores and on the Internet promise to reduce wrinkles and prevent or reverse damage caused by the sun. Do they work? Research suggests that some prescription wrinkle creams contain ingredients that may improve wrinkles. Do they work?

Retinol is a vitamin A is one such product. This was the first antioxidant to be widely used in nonprescription wrinkle creams. Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals — unstable oxygen molecules that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles. Retinol is less potent than the vitamin A derivative tretinoin, a prescription wrinkle cream treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating wrinkles. Tretinoin is available only by prescription. Avoid vitamin A derivatives if you are pregnant or may become pregnant because they increase the risk of birth defects.

Some products may cause excessive skin irritation, rashes, burning or redness. Be sure to read and follow the product instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist to limit possible side effects.

The FDA usually classifies creams and lotions as cosmetics, which are defined as having no medical value. So the FDA regulates them with far less regulation than it does drugs. This means even prescription wrinkle treatments and  products don’t need to undergo rigorous testing for safety and effectiveness before approval to go on the market.

Symptoms Of Allergy

An allergy refers to a misguided reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. It is misguided because these foreign substances are usually harmless and remain so to non-allergic people. Allergy-producing substances are called “allergens.”

Allergy and symptoms can be categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. Mild allergic reactions can include Rash, Itchy, watery eyes, Congestion, Mild reactions do not usually spread to other parts of the body.

The parts of the body that are prone to react to allergies include the eyes, nose, lungs, skin, and stomach. Although the various allergic diseases may appear different, they all result from an exaggerated immune response to foreign substances in sensitive people. The following brief descriptions will serve as an overview of common allergic disorders.

Allergic Rhinitis- more commonly called hay fever is the most common of the allergic diseases and refers to seasonal nasal symptoms that are due to pollens. In 1819, an English physician, John Bostock, first described hay fever by detailing his own seasonal nasal symptoms, which he called “summer catarrh.” The condition was called hay fever because it was thought to be caused by “new hay.”

Year round or perennial allergic rhinitis is frequently due to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, animal dander, or molds. It can also be caused by pollens. Symptoms result from the inflammation of the tissues that line the inside of the nose (mucus lining or membranes).

The most common symptoms are: Stuffy nose, Runny nose, Sneezing, Nasal itching, Itchy ears and throat,  (throat clearing)

Ez Cures To Help Stop Your Snoring

Almost all of the cures for snoring revolve around clearing the blockage in the breathing passage. This is the reason snorers are advised to lose weight (to stop fat from pressing on the throat), to stop smoking (smoking weakens and clogs the throat), and to sleep on their side (to prevent the tongue from blocking the throat).

Dental Appliances Can Cure For Snoring http://snoringinformationcenter.com/orthodontics-anti-snoring-appliances.html

Specially made dental appliances such as a mandibular advancement splint, which advance the lower jaw slightly, and thereby pull the tongue forward, are a preferred mode of treatment for social snoring. Typically, a dentist specializing in sleep apnea dentistry is consulted. Such appliances have been proven to be effective in reducing snoring and sleep apnea, however side effects include the possibility that a patient’s bite could be altered.

Sprays And Nasal Strips Can Stop Snoring

When you’re not asleep, air flows freely through your breathing passages. But at night, nasal passages become restricted and throat muscles relax, making it harder for air to pass through.

You may want to first try either the nasal strip, then the spray/rinse solutions on the market. Or you may need to use both together to get maximum results. Don’t give up until you’ve explored all snoring solutions.

Lifestyle Changes Can Cure Snoring

Alcohol and tobacco consumption each have an affect on the nasal and airway passages. If you are an individual that snores it is important to recognize that these two chemicals will negatively affect your body and increase the amount snoring that will occur when under their influence. Another cause of snoring can be allergies that block the nasal passages and affect the throat.

Tips To Help Your Arthritis Pain

If you have arthritis these tips may help.

You can use one or more of these methods for arthritis pain relief, excluding ones that prove not to work for you. These methods are designed to be used on top of medications or other doctor prescribed arthritis control, and should not be substituted from your doctor’s orders.

Tip#1.
The first thing you should realize about arthritis is that there is in no way one particular method of easing the pain and controlling the disease. Different things work for different people, and you may have to employ more than one method to reach maximum relief.

Tip#2.
Cold compresses can help in dealing with day to day pain while working in the kitchen or doing house chores. You may need to apply some kind of cold compress like bags of ice or ice packs multiple times throughout the day, but by setting up a schedule that works for you will allow you the opportunity to take a quick coffee or reading break while caring for your arthritis. Alternating hot and cold works for many people.

Tip#3.
Use a hot tub. A lot of people use this method near the end of the day, where they can let their bones and joints soak until they’re relaxed enough to sleep well for the night. This method does not work for everyone and can be dangerous if you have additional health problems. For this reason, you will want to consult your doctor before using this method on a daily basis or making a part of your usual routine.

Hearing Aids-Which Are The Best

Many… Most of us start loosing our hearing as we get older and usually end up wearing hearing aids. Many people are un happy with their hearing aids which ends up leading to the question which is, what is the best hearing aids.

I’m no expert but in my research I’ve found the answer to this question and it may surprise you. There is no best hearing aid. What works and makes you happy may not work for me. I have found though that if your hearing starts to diminish a little it doesn’t hurt to buy an inexpensive hearing aid and use it for a while before spending a lot of money on costlier custom hearing aids. This allows you to become use to them. Wearing a hearing aid is something different and can require some getting used to.

Keeping the above in mind if you are trying to find the best hearing aids, then there are really a few different kinds that you are going to want to know about. If your hearing is really bad you want to make sure that you consult with an audiologist who is going to be able to help you to choose the proper hearing aid for your own particular needs, budget and lifestyle.

Therefore it is really hard to classify any hearing as being the ‘best hearing aids’, because the type of hearing aid that you should get is going to depend on the particular type of hearing problem that you have.
